MGM Grand Detroit's “Extreme Green Team” is committed to providing both conventional and innovative environmental conservation initiatives at our resort. We have been recognized as a leader not only because of our customary hotel green initiatives, but also for our non-traditional practices that set us apart such as our on-site butcher shop which reduces trucking volumes, lessens waste and grease recycling

- MGM Grand Detroit holds a "4 Key" rating
from the Green Key Eco-Rating Program - Certified as a Green Lodging Michigan Leader by the Michigan Department of Energy and Labor & Economic Growth
- EPA Waste Wiser Partner
- In 2019, the MGM Grand Detroit Recycling Center recycled 3,148,000 pounds of material (including cardboard, grease, plastic, glass, food compost and more)
Green Meeting Attributes
- MGM Grand Detroit's back of house recycling areas are used to separate and collect recyclable materials, including paper, plastic, glass, cardboard, metals, kitchen grease, and other commodities. Recycling bins are provided for guests’ convenience in the convention center, guest's rooms and throughout the casino floor.
- All events use china, glassware and silverware as well as reusable cloth napkins and linens instead of disposable plastic or paper
- Sales kits and meeting planner guides are offered electronically and include information about attractions that feature the local ecosystem
- Menus contain options for organic, local and/or vegetarian food and beverages; water service can also be limited to pitchers and/or water stations in lieu of individual bottles of water.
- We source notepads and pens with recycled content
- Flip charts have minimum 30% recycled content. Only water-based markers are used instead of permanent ink markers.
- Reusable white boards eliminate the need for paper flip charts and water-based marker options instead of toxic permanent ink markers are also available.
- E-waste is recycled and outdated A/V equipment is donated for reuse to schools or charitable organizations, including computers
- The following factors are considered when evaluating A/V equipment (lighting, audio, and video): life span, energy star compliance and power consumption.
- All partially used hotel and spa amenities including shampoo, conditioner and soaps are donated or recycled
- Batteries and lamps are recycled or properly disposed of if recycling is not available
- Equipment and lighting that are not in use are powered off where possible.
- Local vendors and subcontractors are used where feasible.
